George Washington Carver Community Garden

The Vision

Envision da Berry was able to work with the Housing Authority of New Iberia in creating a community garden at their location.   We led the efforts in procuring the start up funds, as well as orchestrating the volunteer efforts to get the garden built and ready for planting. Tenants of A.B. Housing Complex receive educational garden mentoring from the Acadiana Growers Alliance.  During that time, tenants are able to apply their training at the community garden and develop their urban farming skills that they can use to start their own urban farm. Our hope is that several tenants may see this is as viable source to supplement their income and pursue further. There are so many opportunities available through the #USDA for very low interest beginner/socially-disadvantaged/minority farmer loans to allow someone to buy property or equipment they need to start a farming venture.  Our next step is to work with the city of #NewIberia to empower new farmers take over the many abandoned adjudicated properties in the West End as way to relieve the strain on city’s resources and spur economic development and job creation in our most vulnerable neighborhood.
